Prayer for a neighbor
Went upstairs to pray with our Persian Jewish neighbor. He has been very sick lately, in fact an ambulance has come several times this month to fetch him for the hospital. We had a great time talking about a range of issues including the revolution in Iran in the late 70's, living as an immigrant in LA, Israel, and my family moving to LA to start a church. It was a blast. When we turned to pray for him I asked him if he was prepared for eternity, at which he responded, "God is the same, there is no difference, you and me." I asked him what he meant. "God is the same for everyone, Jew, Muslim, Christian...," he mumbled. I thought to myself that was not the question I asked him at all. So I asked him if I could pray for him in Jesus' name, at which he responded again, "God is the same, there is no difference, you and me." I then spoke up and said, softly, "Actually I have found Jesus to be quite unique." "God is the same," he spoke louder. He wasn't being rude, just trying to relate to me, or trying to be defensive. Either way it is a cultural mood that is the battleground. I do not feel the urge to the public debate of issues related to pluralistic thinking, but rather the passionate pursuit of following Jesus and finding those that are open to His message be it Muslim, Jew, Christian. I am convinced that controversy surrounded Jesus, and we have gone lame as the church, the only controversy being fallen leaders that prove that the Pharisee is alive in all of us. We must find the most controversial issues of Jesus' life and live there, that is our only chance...
